IMGP2175 Preppy Punk Preppy PunkPreppy Punk It's weird.  Last year I was strictly against sweaters in my wardrobe.  Not consciously, but I really didn't purchase any -- I stuck mostly to dresses and cardigans.  This year, I've already collected a fair amount of sweaters to wear  because (lame Game of Thrones reference here) -- winter is coming.

I think it has to do with trying to stabilize my wardrobe after so many years of buying fun, color-pop, patterned pieces.  I needed nice, complementary sweaters to create a cohesive outfit a higher percentage at the time.  This grey shrunken one is no exception.

Admittedly, there are two reasons I bought this specific sweater recently.  1 - it's Vivienne Westwood.  My eyes literally bugged out when I saw it at Crossroads.  2 -- I love the embroidered planet on it!  It's this weird preppy piece from a primarily punk designer.  And I made it spectacularly more preppy by layering a collared shirt from J Crew under it.

Every fall for as long as I can remember, tartan has been in fashion.  Normally, I associate tartan with preppy school girls gone bad -- black leather, safety pins, plaid leading to the punk look. This?  This is NOT that sort of vibe. I think I'm going for a sort of weird, lazy, chick lumberjack sort of deal.  But you know what?  It was comfortable, had fun patchwork and plaid elements and some graphic art on the tank.  Plenty of interest for a weekend outfit!

Where has the year gone?  Are we seriously already more than halfway through February?  That's way too crazy.  This is about as close as I've gotten to getting on board the patterned jeans trend.  These are super comfy and still seem like something I can dress up or dress down.  I really want a pair of polka dotted ones, but I'm holding back because really, I don't need another pair of jeans.

Where do you stand on the patterned jeans trend?  Share in the comments!

This pretty little vest reminds of nature near a river.  I love its flowy-ness and decided that it should take center stage against a fairly neutral backdrop of supporting clothes.  Also, it sorta reminds of a cape, without fully committing to being a cape wearing adult that has no super powers or secret identity.  And what self respecting nerd doesn't like to wear a cape now and again?

OOTD: Devil's Canyon

I'm a major fan of all things alcoholic and really, the more hipster the better.  So when my friends told me that the Devil's Canyon Brewery in Belmont, CA only opens the last Friday of every month to party and sell beers on tap, I was totally there.  You mean I can sample craft brews in a limited window with a select few in the know?  Count me in! Yeesh, I drink the Bay Area Kool-Aid more and more every year.

Since I was all ready to get my drink on, I decided to go with a loose tunic over skinny jeans and boots.  The boots because we walked to and took the train and the loose tunic to cover my inevitable beer belly.  And the skinny jeans so that I didn't look completely bloated everywhere ;).

And a few shots en route and at the brewery itself:

I ended up having the Pilot Brew, which as a very sweet, dark orange blossom flavored beer, a blonde beer and the Full Boar Scotch Ale.  In the end the Scotch was my favorite.  I would definitely be down for doing this again!

What kind of event would you go to in a heart beat?

One of the things I miss about living at home with my parents is the presence of a backyard.  While I may not be sliding through a Crocodile Mile or practicing my soccer skills, I could certainly take advantage of one with a good bock and a glass of wine.  Luckily, the BF's sister has a house nearby, so I can vicariously live her priviledged backyard owning life.   I also use her to vicariously have kids, be married and write a food blog.

The title of this blog is also homage to one of my favorite children's cartoons I found as an adult - the Backyardigans.  And after watching it with my god child a few years ago, I totally don't watch it on my own.  Really.

I totally dig the ankle jean trend.  I mean, how sexy cool is seeing a little bit of ankle between the hem of skinny jeans and the top of a high heeled shoe?  Too bad my height makes it so that your typical ankle jeans are NORMAL jeans for me.  Which is great.  But not when I want to be sexy cool.

Until I found skinny crops.  And now I can join the club of the of sexy cool ladies everywhere!  Now, who's going to tell me the secret password?

OOTD: Muted

Well, nothing like opposites back to back.  Yesterday's post was about really bright clothing, and today is a much more muted palette.  Sometimes it's fun to wear something kinda preppy with whatever hair and a red lip.

Anyone else think that it's funny I'm wearing cropped jeans as ankle pants?  I'm sure I've talked about this before, but I just can't get over it.

In other news, I heard that Swap-o-Rama, a massive clothing swap, is coming to the Bay Area!  There's one in San Francisco this weekend and another in San Mateo in May.  I'm going to try to go to both!  Who doesn't love free clothing?  If you're planning on going or are interested, hit me up with an e-mail -- would love to meet some of you! Check out the deets here: http://swaporamarama.org/events.htm.

OOTD: All American Color Pop

This weekend was kind of a weird one for me.  I stayed out till 2-3am both days with friends despite having a sore throat.  I ended up losing my voice because I had to conduct conversations at a loud volume over club music.  And each day I woke up at 8am feeling perfectly fine and non hungover.  What's up with that?

I thought I'd try to do the whole tucked in shirt and cropped pants trend.  While I looooove the color combination and I actually quite liked the outfit that day, in retrospect, it makes my legs look super short.  I think next time I'll either wear heels or leave the shirt untucked with a belt.  Or both.   Ah well, that's what a blog like this is for right? Next time!

In other news, these loafers were an impulse buy from Target.  The red and patent leather is just too good!  I swear, I can't walk out of that store without spending a bajillion dollars.

Happy Birthday to all our Presidents!  Thank you for your service to this country :).  Hope all y'all that got the day off got the most out of it.

Today's OOTD is brought to you by: "Random things I find hilarious".  I had a funny conversation with a 2 year old the other day.  It goes like this:

Me: Hi! What's your name?

Baby: Nope.

<Her mom tells me her name is Athena>

Me: Is your name Athena?

Baby: Nope.

Me: Ok, well I'm just going to call you Nope.

Baby: Runs away

Babies crack me up.
