San Diego: Part 1

So an abrupt schedule change at work left me going from an all out sprint to a easy jog.  So when my manager suggested we take vacations before things really picked up again, I jumped at the chance.  All that was left then was, what to do with my time?  Well, after spending 2 days just lounging around and cleaning up the house, the BF and I decided to suck up the 8 hour drive to San Diego and hang out.

Unfortunately, my dreams of warm sunny days were thwarted by overcast, chilly weather.  So boo on that.  But, we did have a pretty fantastical time nonetheless and, if my spontaneity post was any indication, maybe a little too much food and drink.

San Diego

I'm not sure what it is with famous Chicago food chain entrepreneurs retiring in Southern California, but our first stop was the amazing Richard Walker's.  A breakfast/brunch staple when we lived in Chicago, we absolutely had to make it out there.  Their bacon is thick-cut and absolutely divine.  But my personal favorite dish there is the Mandarin Orange Crepes.  In fact, I wanted them so bad, I ate one before I could take a picture!

San Diego

After brunch we made a tour of the Gaslamp district, wandering into shops and whatnot.  We also stopped for drinks and snacks at various places along the way (thanks Yelp!) including the Tipsy Crow (which had absolutely stellar chips and blue cheese fondue), the Field, and the Neighborhood.  And I have to say, the Neighborhood had the absolute best Steak Frites I've ever had.  You've already seen this picture if you follow the blog, but it's worth another showing:

'Twas definitely a food filled day.  We went back to the hotel full, happy and tired.  Stay tuned for Part 2!
So tell me -- have you taken an impromptu trip?  Where?  How did it turn out and what did you do?

Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Oh no! I think Blogger ate some of the reader comments! I think I still remember...

@Liezl - Richard Walkers was still as amazing as I remember. Though the restaurant in San Diego was suuuper small and there was a line outside. I was so hungry! And yes, we sucked it up and drove, but it was still fun.

@thatdamngreendress - There will be more food pictures upcoming, but I think this set is the most drool worthy.
